When real people walked the ramp at New York Fashion Week

For most people, clothes are the real star at a fashion show but at New York Fashion Week, the spirit of the people stood out. Designers are breaking the model mold. They are making models out of their muses. Not only regular real people were cast as models, also people who are looked down upon with pity by the society took the stage with pride and glam. It was one hell of a week!

Indian acid-attack survivor Reshma Bano Quereshi slayed at New York Fashion Week wearing a dress designed by Archana Kochhar. “This walk was important to me because there are so many girls like me who are survivors of acid attacks, and this will give them courage,” Qureshi said, according to the Associated Press. “And it will also go to show people who judge people based on their appearance that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover – you should look at everyone though the same eyes.” You go girl!

  • Madeline Stuart

It has been a year since Madeline Stuart made her debut on the New York Fashion Week runway. And now the Australian supermodel has returned to where it all began, gracing the catwalk for the Art Hearts Fashion show. As is often common of those people with Down’s Syndrome, Madeline struggled with her weight. She lost 44 pounds with a motive to become healthy and the decided to follow a lifelong dream of modelling. “I hope through modeling I can change society’s view of people with disabilities, exposure to creating awareness, acceptance and inclusion,” she said.

  • Amruta Fadnavis

Wives of politicians are generally spotted doing charity work, but Amruta Fadnavis, Maharashtra Chief Minster Devendra Fadnavis’s better half is breaking those stereotypes. She recently walked the ramp at the New York Fashion Week as a showstopper for the Chasa Institute of Design and Technology, a Pune-based college for economically-disadvantaged students. We admire her for her outlook and being different.

  • Sunny Leone

This time around, the New York Fashion Week has that extra dash of glamour, in the form of the Baby Doll, Sunny Leone. She is first Bollywood actress to have walked the ramp at the coveted fashion week. She looked stunning and simply stole the show with Priyanka Chopra cheering her from the front row.

  • Shaholly Ayers

05

Shaholly Ayers has changed the way we view disability at NY Fashion Week. “Being a part of NYFW is a dream come true for any model, especially a model who is different. I am honoured to be involved with Global Disability Inclusion and FTL Moda, and to help the world see people with disabilities should be recognised for their accomplishments and not their disability,” said Shaholly Ayers. We couldn’t agree more.

  • J. Crew

06

The models who stood around the edges of a sun-filled gallery in downtown Manhattan, were not the typical young, porcelain-skinned sort who can effortlessly pull off fuchsia lipstick. Rather, visitors to J.Crew’s presentation at New York Fashion Week met a diverse cast of characters, who varied in their ages, sizes, and skin-tones. They were the real people of America.
